Video Chatting

VIDEO CHATTING

To begin with, video chatting was invented at the same time as the television. But then, the technology wasn't as good as today's, making video chatting hard, complicated, and expensive. This made it hard for video chatting to be used in day-to-day life. So, this type of communication could only used by NASA, who invented this so they could communicate with the people who were in the first manned space flights.

The Original Video Chatting Software

The first video chatting software invented by NASA consisted of two closed-circuit television systems that were connected through cable. But instead of cables, two frequencies were used, one for each direction. After that worked, the scientists took the technology a step further by using it for special trucks. Some people tried to use normal telephony* networks for transmitting slow-scan video, but due to the lack of technology, the picture nor the voice transmission were of quality.

Video Chatting became more popular in the 1980s, the era in which a lot of development in digital telephony transmission networks was made. Although, at the beginning video chatting was very expensive, it became less and less expensive as it grew more and more popular. By the 1990s, video chatting was available to the general public. Also in the 1990s, a revolutionary invention was made. IP* based camera chat was developed. This allowed better video compression making it possible for us to video chat with someone using a personal computer. Video chatting just became more and more popular from there, and today almost everyone knows and uses video chatting software to have a meeting or talk to loved ones.

Video chat is also known as video conferencing. This was developed at the same time as the television. They consisted at first of two closed-circuit television systems that were connected through cable. NASA used this type of communication on the first manned space flights. Instead of cables, two frequencies were used, UHF and VHF, one for each direction. This sort of conferencing was used for broadcasting from distant locations, but now, going one step further, satellite links are established using special trucks.

Because it was very expensive, this technology couldn't be used as part of common long-distance applications. Some tried to use normal telephony networks for transmitting slow-scan video, but didn't succeed due to the lack of picture quality and efficient video compression technique.

The 1980s marked the development of digital telephony transmission networks, like ISDN. The expansion of such networks led to the appearance of the first dedicated system from companies that specialized on this particular area. This is how video chat started. It was still quite costly, but throughout the 1990s, they evolved from expensive proprietary equipments to rather standard technology available for the general public.

In the 1990s something revolutionary was developed. IP based cam chat was developed and along with it more efficient video compression. This allowed video chat using you personal computer. The technology used is basically the digital compression of audio and video streams in real time. Codec, short for coder/decoder, is the common name used for the hardware and software that perform the compression.

As it was shown, cam chat involves compressed audio and video streams. But how to we input or output them? Video input is usually done with a video camera or web cam. The output of video streams involves hardware like a monitor, television or a projector. Microphones are used to input audio streams into a computer and speakers allow the output.

After all the inputs and outputs, the audio and video streams are compressed up to 500 times. The resulting stream is then subdivided into labeled packets, which are sent to the recipient. The codec must be the same so the recipient's hardware decodes the received packets, see the images and hear the sounds. Mostly digital networks like ISDN and IP are used. That is the basic process involved in cam chat.

There are some things that present a problem with this type of communication. Some people believe that eye contact is very important in a conversation. Traditional telephone conversations do not allow any eye contact, but cam chat is believed to be even worse because it seems that the interlocutor avoids eye contact. This is, of course, a wrong impression and the problem may be overcome with advancing technology.

MORE DETAILS…

Nowadays, most people use the internet and all its features. But the question is how did it all begin? Video chat is something that is becoming more and more popular because it allows the users to hear the voice of the other person and see them at the same time. If you think about it, who wouldn't like to see the person they talk while engaging in the conversation?

VIDEO CHAT APPS

Skype is one of the oldest, and probably the most well-known, video chat app out there. Skype features video chat, voice chat, and instant messaging capabilities amongst its 700 million users. That’s probably the best thing about Skype.

Viber accomplishes all the usual tasks you’re looking for – free text, calling, photo messages and location-sharing with Viber users – but you can also share items such as files and your location. And, Viber allows group calling facility for up to 40 participants, just in case need to chat with that many people at once.

Facebook is a known social networking site. It offers many features such as sharing posts, pictures, and videos. It also gives us the chance to chat with friends.

Wechat is just like any other convenient applications seen in the App Store. It also offers video chats using your phones.

Three Modes of Communication

The three modes of communication are the Interpersonal, Interpretative, and the presentational mode. The Interpersonal mode is the most common mode of all. It happens every time we speak / talk, share ideas or express feelings to other people. Interpersonal mode of communication is simply the common social interaction from one person to another.Second is the Interpretative modes of communication are priority seem to be more complex than the first one. Interpretative, itself from the root word "interpreting" Means to Act. To act or to use gestures, signals, body languages etc. .. It simply Means to act spoken or written languages. Interpretative mode of communication for me needs a broad memory and better understanding in order for it to be understood. And last but the most complicated mode of communication is the presentational mode. Means simply presentational mode to present ideas / informations to a mass number of audiences; (like public speaking or press conference). Presentational mode of communication uses formal presentation about the topic. In order for it to Become formal, a more complicated process is required.
In addition to this topic, the process of communication models Requires four skills that is being used in this process that are very natural to us. Those skills are reading, writing, listening, and proficiency.
"Communication-By-Objective Approach"
We have discussed about the Communication-By-Objective Approach or simply the CBO Approach. According to the definition, the CBO Approach is a step by step, whole into parts method that includes, planning a message, composing a draft and completing a message. First you should identify the message and learn the objectives. Then, proceed to the planning of the message. You should also visualize the audience to know their interest and get the appropriate ideas to present. Gathering supporting information is also needed like brainstorming and non-stop writing in which discussion and writing method is done. Next is organizing the information using patterns like direct pattern for good news and indirect pattern for bad news. Composing a draft wherein you need to choose appropriate words to construct sentences for assembling paragraphs. Next is choosing paragraph locations and check proofread for revising and editing. Then you will finalize your work.

Then the next reporter discuss about the role of technology in communication. Technology is the making, modification, usage, knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems and methods of organization. Technology makes our communication easier, convenient, and wise. We can use medium to communicate if the distance is a barrier. But this medium can be also a barrier for effective and good communication. It saves money, time and effort. Regarding the fact it give us knowledge. Those medium is a hindrance because sometimes we are experiencing poor signals and poor internet connection that really affects our good communication with others. We can say that technology has a good and bad effect on us depending on its purpose and how are we going to use it. Technology is indeed a big help for the everyone of us especially to an Information Technology students like us.
